Looking to build a gun cabinet but don't want to spend too much money? Here's a step-by-step guide on how to create one using recycled wood. The same method can be used to create other items like a bench. Just follow these simple instructions!

Step 1: Plan

Start by planning the project. Consider the layout and design of the pieces before starting.

Step 2: Build the Frame

For the main frame pieces, use 2x4s. Cut 2"x4"x6's in half (1.5"X1.25") and trim them to an overall height of about 56". Use one 2x4 cut 13" long laying flat on the base and one standing vertical on the top. Repeat for the other side. 19" 2x4s sitting vertically connected the sides. Split the wood and use screws to keep it together.

Step 3: Attach the Back

Cut the back pieces to cover the entire surface of the cabinet unit. Cut a piece 22"x44" and a piece 22"x12" for the back panel to mount flush on the back of the frame.

Step 4: Add the Walls

Mount the walls on the inside of the frame. Measure how far up and in the bottom of the frame protrudes into the wall in order to mount the wall as flush as possible. Add the top piece of the wall in the same fashion, but don't extend this piece of the wall to the top of the frame so that it may support the top of the cabinet. It should sit recessed about 2" from the top of the frame.

Step 5: Drop in the Bottom

The bottom will rest on the 2x4s that were laid flat on the frame.

Step 6: Drop the Top

The top is a rectangular piece that rests on the interior wall pieces. Screw it into the frame for support.

Step 7: Side Pieces

Measure and screw in some 2x4s to cover the joints of the plywood sides.

Step 8: Exterior Effects

For a gun cabinet, create some barrel rests by carving them into 2x4s using a jigsaw. Screw them in from the outside. Screw in mounts for interior shelves. The shelves themselves should be screwed in from the inside.

Step 9: Door

Build the frame for the door using 2x4s, just like before. Toe the screws in, but some may go through the other side, so don't sink them too deeply. The screws that protrude can be ground flush with the wood using an angle grinder.

Step 10: Door Covering

Route a groove to mount the door panels. The groove need not be flush. Cut the pieces of plywood for the door panels, measure and cut off the corners to fit well, and mount them in the door using a pneumatic brad nailer. Afterward, route a fancy groove in the front of the door.

Step 11: Door Hinges

Line up where you want the door on the cabinet. Line up the hinges on the side and inside of both the cabinet and the door. Route a groove for the hinges on both the cabinet and door, predrill pilot holes for the screws, and secure the hinges.
